September 17 is Constitution Day and Citizenship Day (to commemorate the signing of the Constitution in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787. ) Picture of the USS Constitution, OLD IRONSIDES.
USS CONSTITUTION is the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world - "commissioned" meaning it is an active duty Navy warship."Old Ironsides" is 100 percent seaworthy and is in outstanding condition for a ship more than two centuries old. To celebrate her strength and beauty, and to commemorate certain eventsduring the year, she performs several underway demonstrations,the most famous of which is July 4th.
As of October of 2007, USS CONSTITUTION has gone into a restoration period that will last approximately two years. During the ship's restoration, USS Constitution's 2008 and 2009 underway demonstrations will not be open to the public. We are scheduled to accecpt entries for ticket drawings to USS Constitution's 2010 underway demonstrations begining the fall of 2009.
While USS Constitution is undergoing this restoration period, the ship will remain in the Charlestown Navy Yard at Pier One, and will be open for free, public tours and special events.
USS CONSTITUTION has not had a major overhaul in more than a decade. During the upcoming restoration period, craftsmen from Naval Historical Center Detachment Boston will perform reconstruction work on the spar deck to restore "Old Ironsides" to her 1812 configuration.
